2020 Poster
Our team slogan this year was “Whatever it Takes.” We trained all summer under varying Covid rules without really much hope of actually getting to play. We didn’t know until a week before the season whether we would be allowed to travel to away games, or whether our opponents would be able to travel to Helena to play.
So, after the cancellation of the spring sports season and all the uncertainty surrounding school and sports last fall, actually getting to kick off the season v. Helena High at Nelson stadium was probably the highlight of the season for the varsity team. We lost 8 seniors from last season’s semifinal team, including 6 starters and our top 2 subs, so we didn’t know what we had. Playing what I’m sure is a school record 8 freshman with the varsity team this year, with a mix of experienced junior and seniors, was a learning curve of playing together that improved from week to week.
Getting our parents back on the sidelines 5 games into the season was definitely another highlight for us and for our fans. The fact that we got to play 13 of 14 scheduled games, and square off at season’s end against our cross town rivals really put a cap on a weird, but great season. Though we came up short in the end, we played our best soccer in the finale and on cold and windy pitch the boys gave it their all – whatever it took – to stay in the game through overtime.
The JV team had a tremendous season, getting results against Hellgate and Helena High for the first time in more than 7 years, again playing primarily with freshman, so the future is bright. As always we thank our seniors – Henry, Auggie, Jared, Ethan, Eli and Nate – for their effort, leadership and dedication the last four years.
We were very excited that Henry Lauerman was named the All State goal keeper, Eli Voss and Auggie Tupper were All Conference, and Jace Classen and Addison Wall were Honorable Mention All Conference. All of those boys made the Helena IR All Area team as well.
The future is bright for Bruin soccer – go Bru!
